This collectible model SPAD XIII represents one of the top fighters of World War I. Painstakingly built from Philippine mahogany and painted in the colors of the famed Hat in the Ring squadron, this 1/24-scale model SPAD XIII makes a great pilot gift or a present for any veteran, aviation enthusiast or history buff.
The SPAD, which stands for Société de Production des Aéroplanes Deperdussin, its manufactuer, was one of the most capable fighters of World War II, and one of the most-produced, with 8,472 built. Entering service in 1916, the SPAD was outclassed by the latest German fighters by early 1917. Top French ace Georges Guynemer lobbied for improvements, eventually leading to the SPAD XIII.
The SPAD XIII featured larger wings and rudder, as well as other aerodynamic improvements. A more powerful Hispano-Suiza engine upped its performance, and a second Vickers machine gun doubled its firepower.
Despite the improvements and speed greater than the Sopwith Camel and Fokker D.VII, the SPAD XIII was not as maneuverable, and its sharp stall characteristics made it difficult for new pilots to land the craft safely.
Top American World War I ace Eddie Rickenbacker flew the SPAD XIII, with 19 of his 26 aerial victories in the French craft.
