The collectible model OV-1 Mohawk represents the Armys turboprop observation and attack aircraft. Painstakingly built from Philippine mahogany by our skilled craftsmen with a wealth of detail, this 1/32-scale OV-1 Mohawk makes a great gift for any aviation enthusiast or history buff.
The Mohawk was designed to meet an Army and Marine Corps need for an observation and attack aircraft that could outperform the Cessna L-19 Bird Dog. The Mohawk's mission would include observation, artillery spotting, air control, emergency resupply, naval target spotting, liaison, and radiological monitoring. The Navy specified that the aircraft must be capable of operating from small "jeep" escort class carriers.
The Mohawk first flew on April 14, 1959, with service deliveries beginning in 1961. The Air Force objected to the arming of the Armys Mohawks, with the result that in 1965, a Pentagon directive forbade the arming of Army Mohawks. Fit with advanced sensors, the Mohawk proved to be a valuable observation and surveillance aircraft.
The Mohawk was fast and maneuverable, with a top speed of 425 mph. It served in Operation Desert Storm, and was retired from service in 1996.
