Powered by two Wright R-1820 Cyclone engines, the HU-16 had a range of more than 2,800 miles. It was able to land in seas of up to four feet, and could land in heavier sea conditions when equipped with JATO rockets.
The HU-16E variant was used by the U.S. Coast Guard and featured a longer wing. The Coast Guard used the HU-16 until it was finally replaced by the HU-25 Guardian and HC-130 Hercules.
