History of the YAL-1A:
The Boeing YAL-1 Airborne Laser is a megawatt-class chemical oxygen iodine laser (COIL) mounted inside a modified Boeing 747-400F.
The YAL-1A is a high-energy laser weapon system for the destruction of tactical theater ballistic missiles, which is carried on a modified Boeing 747-400F freighter aircraft.The Airborne Laser (ABL) is being developed b the Air Force Research Laboratory and Team ABL, comprising Boeing, TRW and Lockheed Martin.
The YAL-1's primary function is to destroy tactical ballistic missiles (TBMs), similar to the Scud, while in boost phase. The YAL-1A was designated YAL-1A in 2004 by the U.S. Department of Defense.
