About the A-1E Skyraider
The A-1E Skyraider was a piston-powered attack aircraft built during a time when jet fighters were the new kings of the air. Considered pass in design, the Skyraider almost did not make it to the battlefield during World War II. Nonetheless, this outmoded aircraft proved to be an excellent asset during the war in Southeast Asia, where communists engage in guerilla-style warfare. The United States provided South Vietnam and Thailand with several A-1E units. Flying under the call signs Spad, Zorro, and Firefly, the A-1Es were used to provide support ground forces. Equipped with an assortment of guns, rockets, bombs, and other ammunitions under its wings, the Skyraider was efficient not only in softening enemy infantry, but also in search and rescue missions. The aircraft could stay on air and fire ammunition for extended periods while rescuers extract downed airmen.
