History of the Atlas V:
Atlas V is an active expendable launch system in the Atlas rocket family and is the newest member of the family. Compared to the Atlas III vehicle, there are numerous changes, compared to the Atlas II, it is a near-redesign - there was no Atlas IV. The first Atlas V was launched on August 21, 2002, and since then has had more than two dozen launches, and has a near-perfect success rate. The near perfect mission occurred in June 2007 when the flight experienced an upper-stage anomaly when the engine in the vehicle's Centaur upper stage shut down early, leaving the payloada pair of ocean surveillance satellitesin a lower than intended orbit. However, the customer categorized the mission as a success. In April 2008, Atlas V lifted its heaviest payload to date into orbita 14,625-pound telecommunications satellite. This handcrafted model is painstakingly built by our skilled craftsmen with a wealth of detail and makes a great gift for any space buff or history fan.
